- SUMMARY: Lecture-demonstration by Farley Richmond on Kutiyattam, the Sanskrit dance drama of Kerala State in Southwest India performed in specially designed temple theaters by hereditary actors and musicians. The discussion focusses on techniques which are pertinent to the training of Western actors: basic body positions and movement patterns; the language of gesture; eye exercises and the basic code of facial expressions used to convey the emotional content of the plays. Includes filmed excerpts by master teachers of the Kerala Kalamandalam, K. Raman Cakyar, K. Shivan Nambudiri, M. M. Cakyar, and P. K. Narayana Nambiar.
