- Two-part program telecast on the British Broadcasting Corporation's Omnibus series, January 2 and 9, 1968.
- Part I covers the early years of the Ballets Russes before World War I. Photographs and interviews document the careers of dancers Vaslav Nijinsky and Tamara Karsavina and the ballets Diaghilev produced such as Giselle, Fokin's Pavillon d'Armide, Les sylphides, Schéhérazade, Spectre of the rose, Prince Igor, Afternoon of a faun, and Coq d'or as well as the Stravinsky ballets Firebird, Petrouchka, and the controversial Rite of spring. Part II covers the post-war epoch during which choreographers Leonide Massine, Bronislava Nijinska, and George Balanchine created works for the Ballets Russes. Photographs and interviews document productions of Massine's The three-cornered hat, Parade, La boutique fantasque, The good-humored ladies, Pulcinella, and his revival of The rite of spring (1920), a full-length production of Tchaikovsky's The sleeping princess (1921), Nijinska's Le train bleu, Les biches, and Les noces, and Balanchine's La chatte, Apollon musagète, and The prodigal son. A visit to present-day Venice and Diaghilev's tomb concludes the presentation.
- Former associates who provide in-depth interviews throughout the film, describing Diaghilev, his accomplishments, his manner of working, and the ballets which he produced, include dancers, choreographers, composers, critics, and designers: Tamara Karsavina, Lydia Sokolova, Dame Marie Rambert, Dame Ninette de Valois, Leonide Massine, Cyril Beaumont, Sacheverell Sitwell, Nicolas Nabokov, Laura Wilson, Cecil Beaton (Part I only), Igor Markevitch, Anton Dolin, and (in Part II only) Errol Addison, Leighton Lucas, Ursula Moreton, Henri Sauguet, Dame Alicia Markova, and Serge Lifar.
