- SUMMARY: Cassette 1. Richard Blaustein, director of the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services, welcomes conference participants. Gail Matthews, curator of Community Services at the McKissick Museum, Columbia, South Carolina, introduces conference. Colin Quigley, professor of dance ethnology at University of South Carolina, gives a paper entitled Conceptualizing a comparative framework for Anglo-American dance traditions. Folklorist LeeEllen Friedland reads her paper on Transformation of the American square dance. Paul Tyler of the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago discusses regional square dance repertories. -- Cassette 2. Conclusion of Tyler's talk. Panel discussion led by Matthews, with Quigley, Friedland and Tyler. Matthews introduces the film, "The Shag." Discussion of the film follows. -- Cassette 3. Jane Woodside of the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services gives a paper on the revival of Cherokee dance traditions. Kyra Kaiser, doctoral candidate in anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania, reads her paper Dance as ethnic identity: Historical and social implications of the Cajun Fais Do Do. Panel discussion follows. John Crawford and Lesa Broadhead, dance professors at Kent State University, outline the development of Jonkonnu (John Conoe)in the Southeastern United States. -- Cassette 4. Conclusion of Crawford 's and Broadhead's remarks. Notator and reconstructor Letitia Coburn gives a
- paper entitled Juba and Ring shout: African-American dances of the Antebellum South. Elizabeth Fine, professor of communications studies at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, reads her paper Stepping, saluting, cracking and freaking: The cultural politics of step shows. -- Cassette 5. Conclusion of Fine's paper. Panel discussion follows. Willa Chambers, master's degree candidate at York University, presents The history and development of a folk dance tradition at Berea College. John Bealle, professor of American studies at the University of Alabama, gives his paper Communication and professionalism in old time dance revival. -- Cassette 6. President and publisher of A Cappella Books Richard Carlin reads his paper Yuppies invaded my tradition at midnight: A sociological study of contra dancing in contemporary America. Panel discussion follows. - Reel 7. Concluding remarks by Gail Matthews.
