- Summary
- The Oral History Interview with Ernie Smith documents segments of his early years, his interest in jazz and dance, and his activities as a film collector. Topics covered include: Early interest in social dancing; attending art school; arriving in New York City; working for Marshall Stearns at his Institute of Jazz Studies (now at Rutgers University); film collecting activities; studying film and using it as a teaching tool; "buck dancing," "jig dancing," "the lindy hop," and other unique dance and tap styles; dance artists such as Bill Robinson, Coles and Atkins, and the Nicholas Brothers; and the impact of electronic processing on jazz music.
