Summary
The Larry Neal Photograph Collection documents his personal life and professioanl career during the 1960s and 1970s. Personal photographs include portraits of Larry Neal and photographs of friends and acquaintances. There is a limited depiction of Neal's family life; several images include Evelyn Rodgers Neal, Larry's wife, and there is one image of their son Avatar. Personal photographs also include a number of contact sheets with Neal's photographic work, documenting his travels to Jamacia and Haiti.
Professional photographs depict activities and personalities with which Neal was involved or supported. The bulk of collection images depict Neal's involvement with the Black Arts Movement (1960s-1970s). Contact sheets portray Neal lecturing and socializing at professional functions (i.e., receptions, meetings, etc.). The collection contains a group portrait of scholars at the Gordy Foundation Conference [197?], that explored the impact of Black Culture on the world. Contact sheet images capture a number of Black Arts Movement personalities working on artistic projects or socializing with one another. With the exception of one image of Black Panther H. Rap Brown (Jamil Al-Amin), the professional photographs do not document Neal's involvement with the Black Panther Party. General subjects covered include the Rod Rodgers Dance Company, a theatre production (possibly a play by Neal), and a series of portraits of jazz musicians that recorded on the Blue Note Label. Professional photographs overlap with Neal's personal photographs, as a number of Neal's professional colleagues were or later became became his close friends.
