Local Note
The copy in the Manuscripts, Archives & Rare Book Division of the Schomburg Center is a pre-1926 gift transferred to the Schomburg collection when Catherine A. Latimer was the collection librarian. It includes NYPL's bookplate of Reference Collection of Negro Literature, as well as various stamps like: "Division of Negro Literature and History;" Property of the City of New York;" and "The New York Public Library: Circulation Department, 135 Street Branch, 103 West 135th St." which indicate, this item was originally part of of the 135 Street Branch's Circulation Department. It also includes an inscription on the preliminary page before the title: "Hon. J.J. Crittenden, U.S.S with regards of the author, Jan. 1859." It's imperfect: water-stained, library-bound in red cloth over boards and a gilt spine.
