- John Mackenzie Cory (1914-1988) was Director of the New York Public Library from 1971 to 1978. He began his career at the Library as Chief of the Branch Libraries in 1951 and was appointed to the newly created post of Deputy Director of the Library in 1963. During Cory's tenure the Library suffered severe financial problems resulting from high inflation and sharp cuts in funds from New York City. Cory also taught at the Columbia University School of Library Science and was active in various library associations.

- Summary
- Records document Cory's involvement as Deputy Director and Director with library policies, building plans, fund raising, and special projects. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence, reports of studies, legal and financial documents, speeches, minutes, memoranda, and clippings. Topics include the Mid-Manhattan Library, planning and implementation of the Library automation system, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, unionization at the Library, dealings with government agencies and other library systems, contributions, and social issues. Also in the collection are copies of Cory's speeches, 1963-1977, on library theory, practice and funding. His files as Deputy Director concerning the library at Lincoln Center are included with the records of Director Edward G. Freehafer. Collection includes general files, 1971-1977, of Larry P. Murphy, who was Cory's assistant. Murphy's files contain materials on fund raising and library cooperation.
