- Summary
- Indidvidual and group portraits of actor and director Sidney Poitier. The collection includes studio and candid portraits of Poitier, some of which were used for publicity purposes (ca. 1950s to 1980s); views of Poitier and his first wife, Juanita Hardy (ca. 1950s to early 1960s); with second wife, Joanna Shimkus, and infant daughter, Anika (1972); attending actor Canada Lee's funeral with Bill Parker and set designer Perry Watkins (1952); receiving an award for "The Defiant Ones" from former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt at the Berlin International Film Festival, with Juanita looking on (1958); receiving a citation from the 369th Veterans Association from actor Leigh Whipper (1959); at a "Producer's Night" Oscar presentation for "A Raisin in the Sun," with producer Phil Rose, actress Ruby Dee and businessman Luther "Red" Randolph (ca. 1962); attending the 1965 Oscar presentations with actress Diahann Carroll; and attending a function at the Schomburg Center in New York City (1988).Also included are some motion picture stills from Poitier's films "Blackboard Jungle" (1955), "Goodbye, My Lady" (1956), and "Something of Value" (1957) with Rock Hudson, Frederick O'Neal and Ken Renard; Poitier directing a scene with Richard Pryor in "Stir Crazy" (1980); and a group of stills from "A Raisin in the Sun" (1961) with Claudia McNeil, "Uptown Saturday Night" (1974) with Bill Cosby, and "Duel at Diablo" (1966) that were used in Poitier's autobiography "This Life," published in 1980. Also depicted are a scene from "The Parole Officer," from the television series "Philco Playhouse" (ca. 1952), and a scene from the play "Longitude '49" with Frank Silvera and Herb Armstrong (ca. 1950).
