- Summary
- A dramatization in six parts tracing the history of the fight against slavery in Great Britain and the British West Indies from 1750 through 1834. Episode one follows captain John Newton's first voyage as a slave trader from England to Africa to Jamaica in 1750. Episode two traces the events leading up to the Somerset Case in 1772. Episode three portrays the change in British public opinion when a slave captain is brought to trial for murdering slaves to collect insurance. Episode four presents the heightening conflict between the abolitionists and those with vested interest in the slave trade. Episode five deals with the great slaverydebate in Parliament in 1792. Episode six follows the slave insurrectionin Jamaica in 1831 led by Daddy Sharpe and the eventual emancipation of the slaves in 1834.
